Big V Womens reviews: Round 1
Check out all the Lady Dragons action from Round 1:
Youth League Women vs Sherbrooke Suns
The girls opened the season up in perfect fashion at Balwyn High School even without experienced duo Rachel Bett and Lucy Schneider. It was great to see new arrivals as well as the girls from last year step up and take control of the game. The young Lady Dragons came out of the blocks early with 18 points in the opening quarter whilst at the same time locking down Sherbrooke to 7.
Young Dragon Britt Morkham impressed early off the bench, but it was Michelle West who kept the scoreboard ticking over. At this stage of the season Coach Hauer will no doubt be impressed with the defensive effort of the girls; forcing the Suns into committing 30 turnovers and keeping them to 19% shooting from the field.
A great start to the new season for the Dragons girls with a 64-40 win and they will be hoping they can get a similar result next week against the Chelsea Gulls 4pm Saturday at Balwyn High School.
Player of the Game- Michelle West: 14 points, 10 Rebounds, 5 Steals
Division One Women vs Werribee Devils
It was an unexpected slow start that stunned the sizeable crowd at Balwyn High School. The Devils came out of the blocks early running a fast tempo offense that surprised the new look Dragons ladies. It was a combination of poor rebounding and poor shooting that left the Dragons down by 10 at the quarter time break.
It wasn’t until half time that Coach Nelson could get the girls to pull their finger out and this sparked an 18-8 quarter with a much-improved shooting percentage. All of a sudden this got the crowd involved in the game as they could see a reenergized side on the floor. With Wansbrough and Greene dominating play, the Devils had no answer for the Dragons, these two were simply doing it all in their debut in the yellow and maroon.
The Dragons finished off with an 8 point win, 67-59, thanks to an improved second half on both ends of the floor. Coach Nelson will be making sure the girls don’t have such a slow start next week when they take on local rivals Hawthorn Magic at Balwyn High School next Sunday at midday.
Player of the Game – Rachael Wansbrough: 27 points, 16 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 blocks
