Big V Playoffs Week 1 Review

WEEK 1 FINALS RECAP!!! – SUNDAY AUGUST 2ND

Heartbreak for one Dragons team, Success for another, with the third looking to bounce back after a tough weekend loss.

It was a huge weekend for the Camberwell Dragons, and all 3 games lived up to the hype. The youth women stormed into the championship game, the senior 1 went down in an absolute nail biter of a game, and the youth men’s blistering finals run came to an unfortunate end.

Youth Women

Camberwell defeated Chelsea – 60 – 47

The Youth Women have stormed into the Grand Final defeating Chelsea by 13 points. It was a thrilling clash, with the Dragons closing out the match in fine form, and advancing into the Championship game against the Sunbury Jets.

After a nervous start to the game, the dragons took control in the second period keeping the Gulls to just 3 points and scoring 18 themselves. After the half time break, Chelsea responded and continued to push the Dragons, but the experienced players steadied the ship, and led the girls over the line.

The captain Rachel Bett was superb and led the way (18 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals), with Michelle West (14 points), Zanelle Marama (11 rebounds, 4 blocks), and Grace Ramsden (6 points, 9 rebounds, 5 blocks) contributing in a big way.

This is the first time a Women’s side had made it to the championship game, and its going to be a massive game at Balwyn High School where the girls will look to take out the clubs second Championship.

Senior Women

Camberwell defeated by Geelong – 65 – 67

In a blinder of a match, the senior women came agonisingly close to a star studded Geelong side.

Down by 10 at the main break, the lady dragons came out in the second half and stormed back into the game. It came down to the final seconds, where the girls had one opportunity to tie it up, and another on the buzzer to win the game, with both shots only just missing. Rachael Wansbrough (15 points, 6 rebounds) and Holly Greene (13 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists) led the fight back but it just wasn’t enough to get them over the line.

They now take on the Latrobe City Energy on Sunday with the winner getting an opportunity to playoff for a spot in the Grand Final.

Youth Men

Camberwell defeated by  Whittlesea – 59 – 74

The Youth Men’s incredible end of season run came to a tough end on Sunday, losing to the Whittlesea Pacers by 15 points. In a game that was a lot closer than the final score, the Pacers used their experienced to withstand a blistering comeback in the 3rd and 4th periods to take the victory.

The Dragons fell 1 game short of a Grand Final berth, but can keep their heads up with a very successful season. No one tipped them to make the finals, and the ending up making it to the final 4. Leading the way on Sunday was Tom Clifford (12 points, 9 rebound, 6 steals), James Guley (11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) and Ziva Ivanov (11 points, 6 rebounds) and coach Ezra Kumar can be very pleased with how the entire team finished off the season.

Congratulation boys on a great season.
