A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Dragons Players, Coaches and Families,

Camberwell Dragons produced yet another remarkable year of action and excitement. As we turn into this festive season, there is much to celebrate and I wanted to thank you for your support throughout the year.

We wouldn’t be in the position we are without one incredible individual, Anthony Cullen, Committee member for the past eight years and President for the past three years.  I wish to extend a great thank you for the services and commitment undertaken in your term as President. We are thankful to announce that he will remain on the committee and assist in marketing, development and sponsorship. He was a ‘jack of all trades’ assisting in his formal role as President, to all the odd jobs he took on; cooking sausages, court announcing, Club mascot, high fiving and chatting to all people great and small.

Late this  year we we’re given devastating news of the passing of Benjamin Timothy Hinchliffe Jago, a 5 year Dragon player from U12s to U16s. He would always play the game in highest sprites and sportsmanship, it was a heart wrenching loss of a talented sportsman taken before his time without being given the chance to mature and enjoy his youth. Rest peacefully Ben, you will always be a part of the Dragons.

Dragons’ backbone has always been it’s over whelming family atmosphere and inclusiveness. In 1997, Camberwell Dragons registered 19 teams; in 2013/14 we will register 34 VJBL teams and 4 Big V teams, our highest number of teams ever. We embark on a new era for the club having over 50 coaches guiding our players’ week in week out.

christmas

2013 saw the VJBL program make significant gains with more competitive teams, developing all players and coaches, with 60% of them competing in Finals. Congratulations to the three teams coming away with championship wins – GU12.3, BU14.4, and BU20.1. Individual accomplishments were seen throughout 2013, including many MVPs in the championship season, as well as many of the tournaments throughout the year. Sara-Rose Smith of our GU14.1 has been selected to compete in the Southern Cross Challenge, a fantastic achievement and a demonstartion that the hard work of players and coaches does pay off. Mark Jeffers will also be joining Sara-Rose, coaching one of three Vic Metro teams. Boxing Day sees Dragons first USA Tour commence for a select group of boys and girls touring and playing in the US, likely to be a fantastic experience for all involved.

Our Big V program saw our Youth League Men’s team win the Club first Big V Championship an amazing achievement for these young athletes. We have now been boosted with the inclusion of the Women’s Youth League team, creating pathways and opportunities for all Dragons players aspiring to play in our Division One Big V teams. Congratulation goes to Orlando Mein and Luke Girke, the first ever Dragon players on Sporting Scholarships in Canada, an amazing achievement for both individuals and special mention to Orlando who has been involved with Dragons since U14s.

We are looking forward to making stronger partnerships with Basketball Victoria, Big V, Boroondara Council, Koonung Comets, Balwyn Blazers, Ivanhoe Knights, Whitehorse Mustangs, Bendigo Bank, Moka Pot Café, McDonalds, Harp Hotel and all local businesses that are wanting be involved with Dragons in 2014.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of all our coaches, team managers, volunteers, staff and committee for the countless hours that you all put in to provide not only basketball to the community, but the journey the sport of basketball takes us on.

There is much work to do and 2014 is already shaping up as another milestone in the Club’s history as we forge ahead as a more unified Club.

I thank you all for your support and passion during the year and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

GO DRAGONS
