SEASON 2023 COACHING LINE-UP

It is with great pleasure that we announce Michael Dimattina returning as Head Coach of our Division One Women’s squad for 2023.

Michael is no stranger to the Dragon’s family and indeed mentored the women to an 11-5 run this season finishing 2nd on the ladder at the end of the home and away rounds. They may not have gone the whole way during finals but Michael is keen to extend the journey with the women in 2023.

Please join us in welcoming back and congratulating Michael on his appointment.

SEASON 2022 REVIEW

The season for the Division One Women’s team began in October 2021 on the ash felt courts in Mont Albert, as the indoor stadiums were not yet open due to covid restrictions. While this posed some obvious challenges, the general feel was that it was just good to be back with a ball in hand shooting hoops.

COVID and other unavailabilities meant that the team suited up only 7 players for the season opener at home against Warrandyte in April, a game that was won in the dying seconds thanks to a step back 3pt from Gemma Fyffe. Covid restrictions would play a significant role for all teams as players were continually missing games and trainings, often with very little warning, sometimes overnight.

On the road wins at Warrnambool and Craigieburn were on either side of a controversial defeat away at Western Port, when leading by 2 pts with 0.1sec remaining mysteriously became 0.4sec, which was enough to push the game into OT, and an eventually a double OT loss.

The two captains, Gemma Fyffe and Marnie Haughton continued to score heavily, with Dre Belmonte, Eleni Valos, Lauren Moran, Dani Calvisi, Steph Kennedy and the two talls, Vic Sumskis and Georgia Smart all contributing consistently. Georgia McBean joined the team and Zoe Scott returned from a long-term injury, and by early June the team had begun to develop its identity, culminating with and outstanding win over the previously undefeated Sherbrooke. The team went on to finish the regular season with a 11-5 record and 2nd place.

Expectations were high leading into the finals after six wins from the last seven games, however defeats to the experienced Warrnambool team and a heartbreaking narrow loss to Western Port, ended the season. While the team did not go all the way, it was a terrific season, filled with possibilities, energy, friendship, injuries, unavailabilities, triumphs and defeats, all which galvanised to form a terrific team spirit amongst the girls.

Special thanks go to Matt Bubb, who was very generous with his support for the team, and Ross Wignell for his leadership throughout the season. Also, to Ben Wardlaw and the bench officials and support volunteers at Camberwell, who made the season and game run so smoothly. Special thanks also to Jen Rushgrove who kept all the girls entertained with her stories throughout the season as AC, and Robin Haughton as the team manager. Michael Dimattina, Head Coach.
