VJBL Grand Finals
Its Victorian Junior Basketball League Grand Finals weekend, and with 5 teams in the last game of the season, its going to be an exciting few days in Dragons town. Below is the write up from all the Grand Final coaches.
GU12.3 – Sunday 15th September Camberwell Dragons VS. Ringwood : 1.50pm Eltham High Crt1
Throughout the season it has been tit for tat with the Ringwood Hawks who we face in the grand final this Sunday. We have beaten them once and lost twice and we are ready and due to give them our best for a win this weekend. The girls are very excited and nervous for the match as it most of their first grand final and all their first season in rep! We have had a great year only losing 3 games throughout the entire season and come such a long with so much improvement across the board. Hopefully we can close out our season this weekend with a bang!

GU14.1 – Friday 13th September Camberwell Dragons VS. Pakenham : 7.10pm Dandenong Crt5
Wow! What a year we have had.
We came together back in November, fresh faces, new ideas and high expectations. Going into the Southern Peninsula tournament I wasn’t sure what to expect, we came together nicely knocking off teams that eventually finished in higher grades than us but unfortunately falling short in the Grand Final. Although the disappointment of losing the tournament was there it was hard not to look how far the team had come in such a short space of time and the excitement and enthusiasm within the team was high.
We followed this up in January, Eltham Tournament was upon us and it was clear how hard the girls had trained over the Summer break completing the homework set and training in their own time. Safe to say I couldn’t have been more impressed by the effort each individual was putting in. This tournament saw us as Runners Up again to Diamond Valley 2 in another nail biter…surely its our turn now!
The season has seen the girls work harder than any team I have coached, the want and their desire to learn is to be admired. The girls have put in extra hours on the court and want to get the most they can out of each coach available to them (special thanks to Clayton and Char). We had a tough season, being in Metro 2 I knew it was never going to be a walk in the park. Unfortunately, our away record was not great! Struggling to beat even the bottom sides at their home court…luckily this didn’t kill us too much. Finishing 4th place after a tough road home, we have managed to knock off sides in finals and have been playing some good basketball. Last week saw us steal the game in the final 10 seconds beating Southern Peninsula, this was a result of a sneaky steal from Sara with Milly running the lanes hard and making an open lay up to get us across the line. For those that were there would appreciate how exciting the game was and the buzz that was going around the Camberwell crowd.
This Friday sees us take on Pakenham who have been the side to beat all year. They are big, strong and love their zone defence so we will be looking to Kate for run and her trusty left along with the strength of Zoe C and Linley inside. We are doing our homework this week and are confident we can knock them off. We require Dom’s super help D from split along with Anita’s ability to contain the quick guard, Genna’s pace down the court and require Zoe G to be on her A game anticipating the play. Overall we will call on all 9 players to have a crack and play as a team like we have all season to get the title…we are determined. GREEN POWER! With 2 runners up under our belt, it is our time to shine and take out a title!
We have had some great support this finals series, huge thanks to Clayton for taking extra sessions and helping me out when I have been unavailable. Cannot forget my amazing group of parents getting them to and from training on time without a complaint. Thanks to all those that have come along to our games, the girls and myself really appreciate the noise and support we have received. Get down to Dandenong this Friday night 7:10 to help us get across the line and take out the title. I couldn’t be happier and the girls really deserve this one…we have worked hard to get this far!

BU14.3 – Sunday 15th September Camberwell Dragons VS. Western Port : 12.30pm Frankston Crt4
The BU14.3’s was a team that was put together with very few, if any, of the boys having previously played representative basketball. From the outset my message was simple; we don’t play to win games or win premierships we play to learn & develop as a team and as individuals. If we do happen to win along the way that is a bonus and a by-product of developing together. What I was faced with were ten of the most coachable boys you could ever imagine. Their determination to learn the game plan, enhance their skills and function as a TEAM is second-to-none. Playing the Dromana, Eltham & Nunawading tournaments gave us a fantastic opportunity to continue learning and practicing our game which really helped.
I have SUPER little guys in Joe, Harry, Luca & Tom B who play FANTASTIC defense and control the tempo of the game, some SUPER mid-size guys in Logan & Tom L who aren’t afraid to take the ball to basket, shoot from the outside and play “D” and I have four SUPER big men in Tom P, Nick, Will & Slammin Sammy who crash the boards, attack the gaps on offense and play hard-nosed “D” also. What these boys have been able to achieve in such a short period of time is remarkable. I don’t have a starting five I have a starting ten because EVERY one of my boys contributes in so many areas of the game. Be it playing as a forward, a guard or being a cheerleader from the sidelines my boys are just awesome. The GREAT thing about these boys is that they are more than a team, they’re friends.
I would like to thank my parent group for being such a FANTASTIC support to me as coach during the year. My TM’s Sara & Mike for organising everything for tournaments, games, photos, training sessions and the like. Finally to my boys, we approach this game like every other game we’ve played so far; stick to the game plan, be patient, and most importantly……………………………….HAVE FUN!
We play a Grand Final this week on Sunday September 15th @ 12:30pm against Western Port 3 at Frankston. If you’re not doing anything come along and have a look. You’ll see a group of kids represent the Club, their families and themselves so spectacularly well you’ll be amazed.

BU14.4 – Sunday 15th September Camberwell Dragons VS. Ringwood : 12.40pm Eltham High Crt1
Our season goals were simple. Embrace the challenge of representative basketball. Come to training to learn. Improve your skills. Play structured, team-oriented basketball. Have fun.
Our progress to the U14 boys Regional 5 grand final was built through small steps repeated again and again. Reverse the ball. Pass and cut. Drive. Catch and shoot. What goes in counts. Force the ball to the side. Deny the middle. Trap. Run. Keep smiling.
To the boys, good luck to the U14-4 boys in the Regional 5 grand final.
Coaches: Michael Pitt & Harvey Law
BU20.1 – Friday 13th September Camberwell Dragons VS. Casey : 9.40pm Dandenong Crt9
The U20 boys look to do something that has never happened at Camberwell Dragons; go a season of not dropping one game. After a disappointing grading phase we have been tested on only a few occasions over the season, but we know as a playing group this Friday’s Grand Final, Casey will test us. We have been on a high for a long time so they will come out firing. But like in games throughout the season we have been up to the challenge each and every time.
It was been a great year and we look to finish it off in style. Come along on Friday night and support the guys for most of them their last VJBL game for the Dragons.
Coach: Ezra Kumar
Make sure you get down and support the club, the players and the coaches, and make the weekend a great one for all. Good look to all teams in the Grand Final, and good luck to all Camberwell teams competing in the Bronze medal game as well. Go Dragons!!
