Nelson fires as Dragons rally to hold off Gators

Angus Nelson led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds and James Coleman added 13 points, five boards and two steals as our Big V Youth League One Men’s team rallied from 21 down at the half to beat Altona at Balwyn High School on Sunday.

Sam Veitch added 13 points and four assists for the Dragons, who caught fire in the second half – outscoring the visiting Gators 57-33 after the main break to secure a much-needed 90-87 win.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Camberwell, which had five double-digit scorers and shot the ball at 48 per cent from the field.

Altona dominated the first 20 minutes en route to a 54-33 lead at halftime, but couldn’t hold back the red-hot Dragons in the second half.

Camberwell outscored its guest 27-18 in the third to slice the Gators’ lead to 12 with one to play, and then reeled Altona in with a 30-15 final quarter.

The win secured a weekend split for the Dragons, who lost 97-83 to Bulleen at East Doncaster Secondary College on Saturday night.

Camberwell closed Round 8 with a 7-4 record and in fifth place, while Altona slipped to 1-8.

In the late game at Balwyn High on Sunday, visiting McKinnon took control early and never looked back in a 91-77 win against our Championship Men’s team.

Anthony Kimble paced Camberwell with 22 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and Ben Crowe added 18 points in 26 minutes for the Dragons.

Sharif Black (27 points) and Nathan Davis (26) combined for 53 of McKinnon’s 91 points.
