Big V Playoffs Week 3

Its Division 1 Preliminary Finals action as the Camberwell Dragons Senior Women take on the Whittlesea Pacers for a spot in the Championship round!!

Senior Women

Whittlesea vs. Camberwell – Sat 8pm @ Mill Park Basketball Stadium

Its going to be a massive test on Saturday Night as the Dragons head to Mill Park to take on the team that only lost 2 games all year, the first placed Whittlesea Pacers. Starting at 8pm, the women will be faced with a hostile crowd as they fight for a spot in the Division 1 Big V Womens finals.

The Lady Dragons have had a fantastic finals thus far, progressing further than any senior women’s team has in Dragons history. It started with a heartbreaking 2-point loss to Geelong, only just missing two opportunities in the dying seconds to take the game to overtime. That loss meant the girls were forced to play in an elimination final against Latrobe City last weekend. And it was the Dragons proving they had a little to much experience and class, taking a 7-point victory.

That win guaranteed them a spot in the final 3, and a preliminary final against the Whittlesea Pacers. Whittles have been the team to beat all season long, losing only 2 games, with the leagues best offense, and one of the leagues best players in Kimetria Hayden. The Dragon’s have not been able to get a victory against the Pacers this season, losing by 20-points early in the season, and 9-points a month ago. But they are definitely a chance to win it.

Head Coach Justin Nelson had this to say about the game:

“Great for this young team to be involved in another final, an opportunity to further our learning. We are coming up against the best team across the season, so we go in under no illusions, the Pacers are favourites and we’ll need everything to go right for us to get the win. I’m really pleased with what we have done this season, the Dragons have developed a winning culture and hopefully we can keep that going. A great opportunity awaits us if we can get the job done against a formidable opponent.”

The girls have played with effort and heart all season long. They weren’t supposed to finish top 2, and they have done that. They have proved they are one of the best sides in Division 1 women, and have made it to the final 3. And they are going to need to play the best game they have played all season long to get this victory. Holly Greene has been superb all season long, and even better during these playoffs. Rachael Wansbrough and Sarah Stone provide offensive firepower, and can score quickly if they get going. Jessie Khera has been unbreakable when it comes to team defense, and Elyce Lambrou has provided a much needed spark off the bench. They are going to need every one of the girls to perform this weekend, and every one of the Dragons fans right behind them.

Dragons fans, its going to be a huge Saturday night game at Mill Park Basketball Stadium, and the girls have a massive chance to progress through to the clubs first senior women’s championship round. They need your support. Get over to Mill Park, wear your Dragons colours, and be as loud as you possibly can as the Lady Dragons look to keep their season alive in their biggest game of the year.
